The Nazare Canyon

The Nazare Canyon is located nearby the coast of the fisherman village of Nazaré. It is known as being on of the largest undersea canyons of Europe, and it separates the Iberian Peninsula on a extension of 211km, with depth range of 50 and 5000 meters.

Why are the waves so big?

Simple: the Nazare Canyon creates a phenomenon that makes the waves travel at a much higher speed by the geological failure, concentrate all the energy that it creates nearby the coast of Nazare (Praia do Norte). That is what the Nazare is so visited nowadays, so everybody can watch the gigantic waves like nowhere in the world.
